FAQ's

Will medical aid cover my sessions?

Unfortunately, currently only clients of HPCSA-registered psychologists and counselors are able to claim back from medical aid.

However, as a newer organization, the C4CSA (est. 2015) is currently in discussions with the relevant authorities concerning this empowerment.

Until then, I aim to provide affordable counselling services, while making my fees negotiable to unemployed and under-employed people.

How much do I have to share about myself and my life in counselling?

As much or as little as you are comfortable with. While counselling is most effective when you are completely open about the specific issues you choose to focus on, there are no obligations.

How often should I do counselling sessions?

Evidence shows that weekly and twice-weekly counselling sessions are the most effective.

Can I do just one session?

Yes, though I wouldn’t recommend it because counselling is a process that needs time to work, one session is unlikely to benefit.

Can a counselor prescribe medication?

No. Counselors and psychologists cannot prescribe medication, only psychiatrists can.

How does couples counselling work?

Couples counselling is about understanding how two people relate to each other and whether they can relate in more healthy and constructive ways. The counselor can assist by understanding any challenges in the communication, power dynamics, and shared values and goals within the relationship.

Typically, the couple will attend sessions together, though the counselor may ask to see each partner individually for a session or two should the process require it.
